Bute Bench

Concept design proposals joint collaboration with my eldest son Luke Turner entry to Bute Bench competition organised by Design Exhibition Scotland

The process of sawing a tree trunk to form planks which inspired the design.  A daily process within the islands Bute Sawmill.

We wanted to make the bench not only functional but also an art piece.  The form of the bench is angular and inspired by the process of a steel saw cutting into a tree trunk to form planks.  The spaces between the bench seat slates are the void formed by the cutting saw.  The cantilevered bench form is representative of an island rising from the sea.  The inspiration for the form of the bench is both the islands geology, nautical and harvesting timber.
